Man found dead after fire in St. Albans home, an accident resulting from smoking in bed, FDNY says

A deadly fire that broke out in a house in St. Albans, Queens, earlier in the week, has been ruled as accidental, the result of smoking in bed, the FDNY said on Thursday.

Firefighters were called to the scene of the fire on the second floor of a 2 1/2-story home on 120th Road, near Farmers Boulevard, just before 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday, an FDNY spokesman said.

A 52-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. His cause of death was not expected to be determined until next week, the city Medical Examiner’s office said.

About 60 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene. The fire was brought under control around 7:45 p.m.

There were smoke dectectors in the residence, but they were not operational, the FDNY said.
