Teachers learn new literacy, math curriculum

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein on Monday welcomed teachers at the Harriet Tubman Learning Center (P.S. 154) in Manhattan to a three-day intensive professional development program designed to prepare teachers for the citywide implementation of a new, comprehensive literacy and math curriculum. The teacher-training sessions that are being conducted at public schools throughout the city are the culmination of a summer-long professional development program that included the distribution of 80,000 instructional CD-ROMs and 80,000 comprehensive instructional handbooks on the new curriculum, voluntary courses for literacy and math teachers and extensive professional development sessions for other educators, including coaches, principals and Local Instructional Superintendents.

“Teachers are on the front line of our effort to improve student achievement citywide,” Chancellor Klein said. “We are committed to supporting our teachers with the strong professional development they need to excel in the classroom and to fulfill their professional goals. This intensive and comprehensive program on our new curriculum will prepare and energize our teachers for the exciting challenges of the year ahead.”
