Soho residents are overjoyed at the denial of a liquor license for a proposed four-story restaurant at 76 Wooster St. between Spring and Broome Sts. The 9,000-sq.-ft. restaurant would have been one of the largest in Soho. GMD Restaurant Inc. had their application denied by the State Liquor Authority on Jan. 21. It’s the third time in four years the S.L.A. has denied a liquor license application at the location.
Barry Mallin, an attorney for Soho residents who filed the lawsuit, said the proposed plan would have caused “havoc” for the street by increasing nighttime traffic and noise.
“A new establishment at this mid-block location will be the beginning of the end to one of the few remaining quiet residential streets in Soho,” Mallin said. “It’s unfair and outrageous that the owner of the building and the operator of this latest incarnation once again forced the community to do battle over issues that were previously decided — not once but three times by the S.L.A. and once by the court,” Mallin said. “They are trying to wear the residents down, but this community doesn’t give up.”
A spokesperson said the S.L.A. could not comment on the reason why the license was denied, since it takes an estimated four weeks for the report to be finished and released.
