Schacht heads Actors Studio School

Sam Schacht, chairperson of the New School University acting department, was recently named dean of the New School’s Actors Studio Drama School.

Schacht succeeds James Lipton, founder of the university’s Actors Studio Drama School. Lipton will become dean emeritus and will continue as host of “Inside the Actors Studio” on Bravo cable television.

A faculty member of the Actors Studio School since its founding in 1994, Schacht takes leadership of the school as it enters its new artistic home in the theater of the Westbeth complex on Bank St.

Schacht, a member of the Actors Studio since 1964, has appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway, regional theaters, film, television and radio. His Broadway credits include John Guare’s “Bosom and Neglect,” “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” “The Magic Show” and the off-Broadway hit, “True West,” with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. He holds a BA from City College of New York and has also taught at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts and at Stanford University.
