The Committee to Save St. Brigid’s Church will hold a benefit Sat., May 12, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Solas, at 232 E. Ninth St between Second and Third Aves., to raise awareness and support for its legal battle to save the historic church on Avenue B and E. Eighth St. from demolition by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Malachy McCourt and Peter Quinn will be among the supporters at the event and the Eamonn Ryan Band will provide music.
In related news, Edwin Torres, president of the committee, said that last week when Mary McAleese, Ireland’s president, was in Queens visiting an Irish cultural center, he approached her and handed her the committee’s information package on St. Brigid’s. The archdiocese has rejected the committee’s proposal to make St. Brigid’s an Irish history center. Torres said the committee is planning to make another proposal.
