Stop Dorm meets with Landmarks

Members of Stop the Dorm/Save Our School met with Robert Tierney, chairperson of the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, and several other top Landmarks officials two weeks ago and reportedly got good feedback on their effort to landmark the old P.S. 64, the former charas/el Bohio building, on E. Ninth St. “We had an extremely good meeting with Tierney,” said Michael Rosen of S.T.D. “We presented the case for landmarking the building and they were extraordinarily receptive. They said they are moving on to the next phase of doing their own internal investigation [of the proposal].” The property’s owner, Gregg Singer, has designed a 23-story university dormitory for the site, but says he may keep the existing building and renovate it if the right tenant comes along that can pay for the project. Rosen said they’d like Singer to sell the building and support the landmarking effort. Singer did not return a call for comment by press time.
