LENTICULAR ARTWORK
For over 20 years, A List favorites (and Depthography Group founders) Robert Munn and Sara Cook have been creating innovative works in the medium of Lenticular imaging — the creation of images that display Three-Dimensional & animation effects. Along the way, they’ve contributed significant technical advancements to the medium. This 20-year retrospective (presented by the amiable art boosters at the Gershwin Hotel) features two decade’s worth of work, including the premier of an on-site permanent installation. Gay Marriage. Immigration. These aren’t just two convenient wedge issues we’ll be hearing a lot of from the folks at Fox News as the 2010 elections approach; they’re the pillars of a new comedy. In the Susan Jeremy-penned “Brazil Nuts,” die-hard Brazilian soccer fan Fabiana has over-stayed her Visa. Her girlfriend Jackie marries Ron (Fabiana’s well-endowed go-go boy pal). Trouble ensues when their tidy little queer arrangement falls under the scrutiny of an America freshly re-obsessed with immigrants. Fri. and Sat., 10:00 p.m., through May 23rd at La MaMa E.T.C. WALK TO DEFEAT ALS
This Saturday, there’s a very good reason to rise early and spend a good deal of the day without cars, bikes, cabs or rollerblades. What you’ll get in return is the knowledge that you’ve helped fight ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) — a motor neuron disease that causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. The 3rd Annual Walk to Defeat ALS fundraiser is a 2.7 mile walk (which is wheelchair/stroller accessible and leashed-dog friendly). It starts at Pier 46 and ends at Clinton Cove (Pier 96 at 57th St.). Once there, you’ll find face painting, live music, games and the camaraderie that comes with gathering to achieve a common goal and support a good cause. Proceeds go to The ALS Association/Greater New York Chapter and help to find a cure, improve the lives of people with ALS and advocate issues of importance to the ALS community. HUDSON RIVER PAGEANT
People are still talking about an event last year at which all manner of artists, activists and curious/concerned citizens gathered along the Hudson to contemplate the Earth — with the help of funky costumes, parades and mind-blowing giant puppets. The second annual “Earth Celebrations: Hudson River Pageant” means to restore Hudson River species and habitat while raising awareness about climate change. It does so through oyster garden planting, live fish releases, river cleansing and “a magnificent dance of costumed kayaks and 30 foot rowboats!” As with so many things in New York, this one must be seen to be believed. Sat., May 22nd, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, at the Downtown section of Hudson River Park (rain date, May 23rd). MUJERES (WOMAN)
Peru-born Flor Bromley (a graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy) performs this one-woman song compilation (accompanied by Jonathan Powers at the piano). “Mujeres (Women)” tells the story of 10 women — all different; all wanting different things; and all with different opinions. Put together into one mighty show, though, they reveal the enigmatic nature of women and the unique characteristics of feminine sentiment.
