The A List will admit to indulging in a certain amount of “nothing is as good as it used to be” nostalgia — but for all the well-deserved accolades lavished on Jon Stewart and his “Daily Show” writers, they’re still standing in the footsteps of the giants who ruled the Earth back in the show’s early years. That’s when “Daily Show” co-creator Lizz Winstead was its Head Writer. See what this Brooklyn gal’s been up to on August 5. That’s the one night of her appearance at Comix NY. If his only cultural contribution happened during an early-career 1980s appearance on SCTV, the good Dr. John would still have secured a worthy place in history — having left an indelible impression as the musical guest in that famed comedy troupe’s immortal “Chinatown” spoof (called “Polynesiantown” — Google it kids, and laugh your heads off!). As for his long and distinguished career, Dr. John has spent decades under the scrutiny of fans and critics alike. Strangely hard to define, he glides between funk, rock, blues, and jazz — yet these genres all fail to encapsulate the sounds his career has produced at one time or another. Like his native New Orleans, he absorbs musical styles with an incredible knack for synthesis. After performing with The Band, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Van Morrison and Neil Diamond, he certainly has a lot of inspiration to look back on. For this show, expect to hear tales (and tunes) about his ongoing relief work following Hurricane Katrina. Joined by his band, (The Lower 911), the Doctor is most definitely in the house. Take a tour of the Meatpacking District!
MEATPACKING DISTRICT
Don’t be afraid of navigating the narrow — but not necessarily mean — streets of the Meatpacking District. Manhattan historian Joyce Gold will present a walking tour which emphasizes the area’s history. Find more information about the area’s genesis from a Native American trading post to a magnet for the meatpacking, dairy wholesaling, and light industry. The tour will also reveal the neighborhood’s connection to the Titanic, Herman Melville and Marie Antoinette. At 1 p.m. on August 1, meet at Jeffrey NY (449 W 14th St., btw. Ninth & Tenth Aves.
