Firefighters battled their way through a smoke-filled apartment in Flatlands Monday morning to make a number of daring rescues.

Units responded to an “all-hands-on-deck” blaze near E. 53rd Street and Flatlands Avenue at around 1:30 a.m., at which time they encountered residents fleeing the Kings Villages apartments from their fire escapes.

Fire Department personnel used one hose-line to knock down the fire, said to have broken out on the fourth floor of the building, and crawled their way through impacted units to help occupants make their way out.

Three citizens suffered injuries and were evaluated by Fire Department paramedics before being taken to a local hospital. Two are reportedly in serious condition and the third suffered minor injuries.

The fire was placed under control at 2:35 a.m. and its cause remains under investigation by the FDNY Fire Marshals office.
