The 2nd Annual Downtown Third Thursdays, which begins this month, aims to highlight the architecture in Lower Manhattan.
The series of lectures, with each taking place on every third Thursday between January and May, are sponsored by the Downtown Alliance.
Lectures that are still open for reservations are as follows:
Feb. 16, 2006 – Kenneth T. Jackson, professor at Columbia University and editor-in-chief of the celebrated Encyclopedia of New York will present “From Dutch Outpost to World Capital,” a look back, and ahead. In 2002, Jackson also co-wrote the book “Empire City: New York Through the Centuries.” At the John Street Methodist Church (44 John St.).
March 16, 2006 – Urban Archaeologist Joan H. Geismar will explore historical debris to find out “Is it Trash or is it Treasure?” At the Seamen’s Church Institute (241 Water St.).
April 20, 2006 – Gail Fenske, an architecture professor at Roger Williams University, will take a close look at “The Woolworth Building, and The Making of Modern New York.” At The Woolworth Building (233 Broadway).
May 18, 2006 – Former New York Times architectural critic Herbert Muschamp will close the event with his lecture titled “Blinking at the Abyss.” Though Muschamp left his post as the voice of the architecture world in June of 2004, he still contributes to other sections of the newspaper. At the Downtown Association (60 Pine St.).
The widely successful event kicks off in January with Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The designer of the proposed 80 South Street cubist residential towers will speak to a full-capacity crowd about 80 South St. at the current building, as well as his designs for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s World Trade Center Transportation Hub.
All events are free, but early reservations are recommended for future lectures. “The Calatrava lecture is completely jammed, but many spots are available for all other events,” said Mark Faris, the series’ spokesperson.
