Valencia vs. Athletico After 48 minutes of play, Valencia was down by one goal in a Downtown Soccer League game last weekend. Valencia’s Niall Gallagher hit a corner ball, which bounced off Athletico’s goalie. Liam Fuerst, who happened to be in the right spot at the right time, scored and tied the game at 1. Two minutes before the end, and by way of an outside-of-the-box shot, Valencia’s Brody Sharoff managed to bring home an amazing 2 – 1 victory for Valencia. The parents have been celebrating to the wee hours…
Real Madrid vs. Mallorca In an earlier game, tied 0-0 at the half, Real Madrid’s Luke Dilworth assisted Striker Ryan Porcaro to get ahead of Mallorca’s Elan Halpern in goal, giving Real Madrid their first win of the season.
Sevilla vs. Barcelona On yet another gorgeous September Sunday, a less-energized than usual Sevilla team took to the field against Roya Sullivan’s Barcelona team. Barcelona’s Joshua Fish shined on defense in the first half, helped out by good boots from Jonah Weinstein, Drew Child and Hailey Coffey.
Sevilla’s James Carney put the pressure on, and Barcelona goalie Jeremiah Wysoker was forced to come out of the goal, but a foul was called on Sevilla. Gabriel Colon persevered, but Sevilla couldn’t make anything happen in the first half. Carney’s next breakaway was stopped cold by Zach Pine, who passed to Fish. His breakaway was smothered by first half goalie Jacob Roter, who successfully defended 7 shots on goal, including several nice moves by Jack Vegas and Sader Matar. Sevilla’s Elias Griffin was all over the ball in the first half, with several good offensive moves and great stamina, but the whistle blew and the score remained tied at 0.
In the second half, Matar started in goal for Barcelona, but was replaced by Child. Griffin moved into goal for Sevilla. Fish dominated again, but Roter stopped him. His breakaway, however, was stopped by Oscar Sullivan. Sevilla’s Nicky Leong blocked a goal kick, but his shot on goal was saved by Matar. Anthony Miguez, Lumia Nocito, Matt Levine and Luke Marable played consistently in the Sevilla “diamond defense,” and the crowd seemed resigned to a scoreless tie.
Tyler Rohan’s corner kick to Roter resulted in a nice shot on goal, which was deftly blocked by Ruby Marzovilla. Fish took over again, but his breakaway was squashed by Griffin, who quickly punted the ball downfield towards teammate Tyler Adams. Vegas headed it to Fish, but Sevilla’s Daphne Tsapalas stepped in and crunched him to block the shot. Griffin came out of the goal to pick up the ball, but Miguez got to it first and tried to clear it. Fish intercepted and neatly tucked the ball into the net for the game winner for Barcelona. The final score was Barcelona 1, Sevilla 0. Both teams are 2 and 1 for the season.
