Two people die after George Washington bridge jump

A man and woman apparently jumped to their deaths off the George Washington Bridge Monday afternoon, police said.

A construction worker saw the people, in their 40s or 50s, walking on the bridge, police said. The couple, who had no identification on them, jumped from the middle of the bridge on the upper level, said Porth Authority of New York Spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

They were alive when they were pulled from the water, about 1,000 feet from the bridge, at about 11:30 a.m. They were taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s hospital, he said.

Both were pronounced dead about an hour later, Pentangelo said.
