Village Alliance BID district expands north of Eighth St.

On Nov. 9, Mayor Mike Bloomberg signed legislation extending the Village Alliance Business Improvement District. The bill was sponsored at the request of Councilmembers David Weprin and Rosie Mendez.

“The Village Alliance BID will provide the extension area with the same level of sanitation, security, business promotion and marketing services, community outreach services, administration and other services that it currently provides to the existing district,” the mayor said. “The services provided to the communities are essential to ensuring that small businesses and the neighborhoods in which they operate, are given every opportunity to succeed.”

The Village Alliance BID extended district consists of 313 properties and 430 commercial/retail businesses.

The existing Village Alliance district covers Sixth Ave. from W. Fourth St. to Eighth St.; Eighth St. to St. Mark’s Pl. and Second Ave. and Astor Pl. With the mayor’s signature, the BID’s district has been expanded to cover Broadway to the south side of 10th St.; University Pl. to the south side of 13th St.; and on the west side of Sixth Ave. to the south side 12th St. and on the east side of Sixth Ave. to the south side of 13th St.

Honi Klein, the Village Alliance’s executive director, said, “We’re very excited and we’re going to go [start services in the new areas] as soon as the funding is released by the Department of Finance.”

Klein said there are two annual lot assessments for property owners in BID’s, one in December and one in June, and that the first one for the property owners in the expanded area likely will be in June. So, she said, services in the expanded area will start in June.
