Wallace R. Forstell, 69; was active on L.G.B.T. issues and in the Grove

Wallace R. Forstell, longtime resident of Jane St., died at St. Vincent’s Hospital Mon., May 16, of emphysema at the age of 69.

A retired New York State Department of Mental Health administrative executive, he was a tireless advocate for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. A former president of the Cherry Grove Property Owners Association on Fire Island, he was also a founder of the Cherry Grove Community Association, which included residents, property owners and longtime renters.

He leaves his brothers Richard and Ronald, his longtime friend and companion of 18 years, Jack Dowling, and many loving friends. He donated his remains to medical research and wished no memorial service. There will be a gathering of friends in his honor at a later date. Contributions may be made in his memory to The World Wildlife Fund.
