Gus’s Place, a restaurant in the Central Village for the past 17 years, has been put on notice by its new landlord that it will have to move by Oct. 11.
Gus Theodoro said last week that new owners who recently acquired the building where the restaurant occupies the ground floor have told him they have other plans for the property at the doubly named corner of Waverly Pl. and Waverly Pl. (where Waverly Pl. has a short divide at a small triangle just west of Sheridan Sq.)
“I’m looking for a new place in the neighborhood,” he said. “I’m in negotiations now but there’s nothing definite.” Theodoro added that there is a slight chance that Gus’s Place may remain where it is until Christmas.
Theodoro has been in the restaurant business in the Village for more than 40 years. Before opening Gus’s, he was manager for 16 years of Emilio’s, a restaurant at Sixth Ave. and W. Third St., which closed soon after he left the place. He had another restaurant, Figs, near F.I.T., which closed several years ago.
Gus’s Place is one of the few New York City restaurants offering a gluten-free menu for those allergic to gluten, which is found in wheat and other grains.
