A worker fell 16 feet last Thursday at the new residential towers Milstein Properties is building in Battery Park City.
The worker slipped and fell while he was waterproofing a water tank in the basement of the new buildings, said Carly Sullivan, spokesperson for the Dept. of Buildings. He was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital with serious head and back injuries, said Matt Coppeto, F.D.N.Y. spokesperson.
The D.O.B. issued a violation to Plaza Construction, the contractor, and stopped all work in the water tanks.
Representatives of Milstein and Plaza Construction did not comment.
The new towers adjacent to the B.P.C. ballfields, known as Liberty Luxe and Liberty Green, will rise 32 and 22 stories respectively and are expected to be complete next year.
“I’m not trying to throw cold water on this, no pun intended,” Mueller said. While Mueller said he’d “love to see it work,” he added, “This project has failed before — it doesn’t exactly have a terrific history.”
The city previously tried to work with a private developer on Pier A, which use to be a marine firehouse, but the project never got off the ground.
Board member Lynn Rollins mentioned that her daughter in Oregon recently told her of a vegan restaurant there that supports itself by running a porn shop in the back. The other board members laughed heartily.
“So moved!” Urstadt joked.
“What are you moving?” Chairperson James Gill asked. “The porn shop?”
Prospective tenants have until Feb. 16 to submit their proposals to the authority for consideration.
