Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Department of Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, and Department of Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty announced on Monday the dates for the City’s eighth annual MulchFest, a program that converts holiday trees into wood chips. Drop-off and mulching of holiday trees and wreaths will take place on Saturday, Jan. 3 and Saturday, Jan. 10. Downtowners can drop off their trees at Tribeca Park at West Broadway and Beach St., Jefferson Market Garden at 6th Ave. and Greenwich Ave. or Sara Roosevelt Park on Broome St. between Chrystie and Forsyth Sts. Drop-off is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All lights, ornaments, and decorations must be removed from the trees prior to drop-off. In addition, the Department of Sanitation will be collecting trees from curbsides and transporting them to MulchFest sites from Monday, Jan. 5 through Saturday, Jan. 10. At the chipping-mulching sites, participants will be able to take wood chips or mulch home from the sites. The closest mulching site for Downtowners to pick up mulch is Washington Square Park at Fifth Ave. and Washington Sq. N.
