stories and songs

A 16-week program of participatory music and stories for young children and accompanying adults intended to develop kids’ enjoyment of active listening, socializing and cultural literacy. Professional musicians and storytellers will entertain and teach each week. Rhythm instruments will be provided. To register, visit BPCPC’s offices Mon. – Fri. from 9:30am to Noon. Advance payment of $192 must be made in person by check or money order made payable to BPCPC. Wednesdays, Jan. 12 – April 27. Sessions are filling up quickly. annual art exhibition

Battery Park City Parks Conservancy offers weekly art classes for adults, teens, children and preschoolers from May 1 thru October 31. Their work, inspired by the gardens and parks of Battery Park City, the majestic views of the Hudson River and the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan, can be viewed at the Annual Art Exhibition. Opening Reception will be Sun, Jan. 23 from 1-3pm. Works can then be viewed Weekdays from 2-4pm thru Fri, March 4. Access at W. Thames St. Free.

babysitter training

The American Red Cross will be offering a 2-day course for babysitters ages 11-15. The course will cover safety issues, first aid, and basic care skills designed to increase leadership and professionalism. Jan. 22 & 29 from 10am – 2:30pm. 2 South End Ave, access at W. Wee drop in

Children 10-42 months can experience and explore a variety of age appropriate projects and materials including play-dough, paint, glue, chalk, and stickers. harry the dirty dog

A play adapted from the book by Gene Zion. Harry is a white dog with black spots who likes everything – except getting a bath! Kids can view films including “Eagle Song,” celebrating the spirit of the Muscogee Creek Nation of Oklahoma, “Retrace,” about an elder who retraces his past creating a landscape of questions, and “First Steps,” about a Cree community in northern Ontario that celebrates the ‘first steps’ of its very young children. Native basket weaving is featured in Little Firefly: An Algonquian Legend by Terri Cohlene and the story “Gluskabe and the Snow Bird” from the book Four Ancestors by Joseph Bruchac. Following the readings, children 7 and up can make a woven bookmark with basket weaver Theresa Secord. Sat, Jan. 8 at noon. Free, but space is limited. Pre-registration is required. Weekly classes begin Jan. 15 and run for 10 sessions. Tai Chi and Yoga classes cost $75 for Community Center Individual/Youth members, $100 for Pool/Gym/Student/Senior members, and $150 for non-members.

The fee for Swimming Lessons (10 weeks) is $135 for both members and non-members. Private Swim Lessons (30 minutes) are given by appointment on Sat. and Mon. evenings, available only in packages of 3 ($90) or 5 ($150). Space is limited. Registration, is required and is now open.
