A 13-year-old girl is fighting for her life after the driver of a box truck hit her on the notoriously deadly Coney Island Avenue in Midwood on Thursday morning.
Police arrived at the scene near Coney Island Avenue and Avenue J at around 7:30 am, where they found the teen lying in the roadway with severe bodily trauma, said NYPD spokesperson Detective Martin Brown.
EMS personnel rushed the girl to Maimonides Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition, according to police.
Initial investigations revealed the teen was crossing the street, though not in the crosswalk, the white truck smashed into her.
The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene, and has not been charged with any crimes, though an investigation remains ongoing, according to Brown.
PIX 11 reports that the teen was exiting an MTA bus just before the collision, though the NYPD spokesperson could not confirm that.
A B68 bus could be seen parked at the crash site right behind the box truck after the incident, and MTA investigators were also on scene.
Midwood’s stretch of Coney Island Avenue has been a deadly corridor over the past decade: seven people lost their lives at intersections along Coney Island Avenue, in the stretch between Ditmas Avenue and Kings Highway between 2011 and 2021, according to NYC Crash Mapper.
The immediate area of Thursday’s crash is particularly deadly, as four other people were killed in crashes within one block of the intersection where Thursday’s tragedy happened, and 39 others have been injured in 27 crashes over the past decade in that area.
