The Jets beat the Atlanta Falcons in their Monday night preseason game by a 24–16 margin, and the victory has helped clarify several important roster questions for Gang Green heading into the coming NFL season.

Still, there seems to be a brewing quarterback battle at MetLife Stadium.

With starting quarterback Zach Wilson out with a torn meniscus and bone bruise to his right leg, and backup Joe Flacco missing the game for rest, that left Chris Streveler and Mike White under center for the Jets.

Streveler, who entered the league after going undrafted in 2018, signed with the Jets this offseason, and is figuring to battle Mike White for a spot on the roster. His play on Monday helped his chances, as he was significantly better than White during the game.

White played the 1st half, along with a single drive in the 2nd half, and posted a respectable 12 passes on 17 attempts for 90 yards in the air. Still, the team failed to score any touchdowns during White’s time in the game, during which Gang Green mustered just 3 points.

Streveler, meanwhile, took over in the 2nd half, and the team immediately turned things around behind his 8 completions on 11 attempts for 119 yards. He tossed 1 touchdown to Lawrence Cager on a 34 yard pass, and led the Jets to pay dirt again on the following drive, when La’Mical Perine rushed into the endzone.

The 27-year-old also added 33 yards rushing — making him Gang Green’s leading runner, amid a porous showing by the team’s running backs

“It was one of those preseason games where you couldn’t get into a rhythm,” White said of his lackluster play.

That performance comes after he outplayed White in the team’s opening preseason game on Aug. 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles, and opens a new quarterback controversy to the team riddled with injuries at the position.

“It’s the 2nd time in a row that he’s done a really good job,” head coach Robert Saleh said of Streveler. “He executed, with the exception of 1 play to near perfection. It’s really cool to watch him play.”

It is possible that the team could move on from White, who joined the Jets practice squad in 2019, and made the roster last season.

He re-signed with New York this offseason on a 1-year deal worth $2.54 million.

With White having more experience with the team, it’s possible that they will keep him around to backup Flacco during Wilson’s absence, but Streveler has certainly made his case for a roster spot.

The two men will likely get another chance to prove themselves when the Jets take on the Giants for their yearly preseason matchup on Sunday.

If Streveler outplays White yet again, the coming quarterback controversy will be undeniable, and open the door for him to make the team when the season begins on Sept. 11 against the Baltimore Ravens.
