After kicking off the 2023 tennis season down under at the Australian Open and then moving to the United States for the 2023 Dallas Open, the ATP men’s tour will head to Florida for the Delray Beach Open between February 13th and 19th.

The ATP 250 event has been a fixture on the ATP tour since 1993. Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul come in as the top two seeds, but there are 11 American men in the draw, not including qualifiers. Can one of them manage to take home the title?

Tommy Paul arrives with a ton of confidence after playing in the semi-finals at the Australian Open. The second seed, who reached the semi-finals at the ATP 250 in 2022, will be seeking his second tour-level title and comes in ranked 18th in the world.

However, despite Paul and Fritz being in the draw, the biggest draw might be American Ben Shelton, who caught the attention of the tennis world when he reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open on his first trip outside of the United States. He’s seeded 8th in this tournament and opens against fellow American Marcos Giron, who is ranked 55th after losing in the quarterfinals of the Dallas Open to Fritz.

Jon Isner will also be in the field after losing in three sets in the finals of the Dallas Open on Sunday. The veteran is a bit of an afterthought in American tennis these days with all of the young players coming up, but he’s still ranked 36th in the world and showed in Dallas that his level remains.

Outside of the Americans in the field, third seed Denis Shapovalov, ranked 27th in the world, is making his second appearance in Florida, having advanced to the semi-finals in 2018 and will be hoping for a better showing than in Dallas, where he lost his first match.

Best Bets for Delray Beach Open

Tommy Paul (+450) to win the tournament

Even though Taylor Fritz is the highest-ranked American at the Delray Beach Open, he simply has not delivered in big matches and his loss at the Dallas Open was just another reason to feel a lack of confidence that he can make it all the way through this draw. Meanwhile, Tommy Paul is 7-2 so far in 2023 with his latest loss coming at the hands of Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Paul is playing the best tennis of his career, and his toughest test at the Delray Open before the semi-finals should be John Isner. Considering how long a run Isner made on the hard courts in Dallas, I’m not sure I can count on the 37-year-old to put together another deep run.

That means we could see a matchup between Paul and Shelton in the semi-finals, which would be great to watch. However, given his recent success, it’s hard to go against Paul.

Denis Shapovalov (+150) to win his quarter

Shapovalov has struggled a bit to start 2023, going 4-3, including an early exit in Dallas. That has only caused his betting odds to become more enticing. The Canadian is still a talented player who should have no problem with his second-round match against Michael Mmoh or wild card Aleksandar Kovacevic. That means a likely showdown against Yoshihito Nishioka could be all that keeps Shapovalov from a semi-final match against Taylor Fritz or possibly young American J.J. Wolf.

Given that all three of those players suffered surprising losses in Dallas, we can lean towards overall form, and Shapovalov definitely has the talent to dispense of either American.

Yoshihito Nishioka (+250) to win his quarter

However, if you don’t trust Shapovalov to advance due to his recent form then Nishioka may be the bet for you. He made the round of 16 at the Australian Open before losing to 20th-ranked Karen Khachanov. However, the earlier part of Nishioka’s draw was fairly easy.

Still, he has a fairly easy draw at the Delray Beach Open before facing the Canadian and then Nishioka has a 3-1 record against Taylor Fritz, so there is a clear path for the Japanese lefty to be a major threat and a dark horse to win the Delray Beach Open if you want to go beyond just the bet on him winning his quarter.

Ben Shelton (+275) to win his quarter

I’m not convinced that Shelton can actually win the Delray Beach Open, but he showed in Australia that he has the raw skill and ability to play with almost anybody. Fortunately for him, his quarter at the Delray Beach Open is pretty soft with only Miomir Kecmanovic to really challenge him. That’s a match Shelton can win, but I’m not confident can take out Dallas Open winner Yibing Wu, who was one of the top players in the Juniors and just ran through higher-ranked players last week.

J.J. Wolf (+1100) to win the tournament

I know Ben Shelton is going to be the trendier bet, but J.J. Wolf bested him in the Australian Open and is simply playing better tennis right now. Wolf wasn’t able to beat Isner in Dallas, losing in three sets, but I have more faith in Wolf beating a wobbly Fritz in the quarter-finals at the Delray Beach Open than I do that Shelton can take out the red-hot Wu in the quarter-finals or an in-form Tommy Paul in the semi-finals.

You can also bet Wolf +330 to win his quarter if you think he can beat Fritz but aren’t sure he can go all the way.
