The Red Wings did not provide details on the cause of death but Howe, considered one of the greatest to play the game, had suffered a debilitating stroke in late 2014. A 23-time NHL All Star, Howe led Detroit to four Stanley Cup titles before retiring in 1980 as the all-time leader in career goals and points.
