The New York Jets received a second massive mid-season acquisition — even though they made the deal for him in March.
Star edge rusher Haason Reddick’s holdout has ended, his agent Drew Rosenhaus announced on Sunday. He will report to the team’s facilities on Monday following their Week 7 primetime clash against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Reddick was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in March but stayed away from the team hoping to push the envelope for a new, long-term contract. He had accrued over $12 million in fines for missing out on OTAs, training camp, the preseason, and the first six games of the 2024 campaign.
As a part of a reworked short-term deal, the Jets are waiving the massive fines and will honor his contract for the remainder of the year.
Rosenhaus, who took on Reddick after he was dropped by his former representation, CAA, earlier this month, said that “we will continue to work towards a long-term extension with the Jets.”
Reddick has been one of the NFL’s most productive edge rushers over the previous four seasons, posting 50.5 sacks during that stretch. Only T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns, and Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals had more between 2020-2023. But his desire for a new contract prompted the Philadelphia Eagles to move on from him, trading him to the Jets in March for a conditional third-round pick.
Jets general manager Joe Douglas knew the 29-year-old’s desire for a new contract upon trading for him, and it is understandable why Reddick wants a new deal. He carried a $15 million cap hit in 2024, which ranked 14th among all edge rushers in the NFL, per Spotrac, before he was set to hit free agency in 2025.
During the stalemate, Reddick requested a trade from the Jets in August, but Douglas issued a swift and prompt statement ensuring that the front office would not consider it. When Reddick was fired by CAA and picked up by Rosenhaus, the Jets gave permission to find a trade last week, but it was more of a negotiating tactic to prove that his market was non-existent.
The 30-year-old’s arrival is just the latest development within a dizzying few weeks. Following a Week 5 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London to drop to 2-3 on the season, the Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh. One week later, after a Monday-night loss to the Buffalo Bills, they pulled off a blockbuster to acquire star wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders to reunite him with his old Green Bay Packers buddy, Aaron Rodgers.
