Steve Matthews' Saratoga selections for Monday, Aug. 6

Best bet: CANARSIE KID (5)

Best value: SANTO ANTONIO (2)

FIRST: Pirate's Treasure compiled eye-catching work slate for first start in 53 days; primed for breakthrough. Bon Raison is another that's training with a purpose for return from eight-week freshener; dangerous. Playwright fits the profile of the top two selections (speedy, rested); right in the thick of this.

SECOND: Santo Antonio is fleet-footed, switches to front-end rider and projects as the dominant speed. Therapist has trained sharply since clear-cut win in last; could easily take another. Codrington regressed in last after pairing up two strong efforts; bounce-back potential.

THIRD: Ajnadeen owns stalker's style that should be well served in compact field. Killybegs Captain was a fast-figured second in last; very dangerous. Hollywood Star is training swiftly and was a strong second at the Spa last summer; don't ignore.

FOURTH: The Great Johanna owns fast late-pace figures and moves to turf; upset call. Chiclet's Dream bested a next-out winner when a clear-cut second in last; big-time player. Walk of Fame makes third start of form cycle after making middle move and flattening last out; worth long look at long price.

FIFTH: Canarsie Kid was a front-running winner in last; controlling speed once again. Major Force runs late and looms the prime beneficiary if top selection hits the wall in the stretch. Bow Tie Affair is another that would be aided if pace meltdown ensues.

SIXTH: Red Zinger has trained sharply since speed and fade when debuting in NY-bred stakes field; improvement predicted. Stop Me If You Can logged two 5-furlong workouts since second to a runaway winner in last; very dangerous. Trance adds blinkers after finishing less than a length behind second selection on July 12; must be factored into the mix.

SEVENTH: Palinodie owns speed and could capitalize on soft lead in field that's light on front-runner. Silver Shaker has finished second at short odds in last three starts; continues trend? Osare has trained sharply since breaking maiden at Belmont in June; don't ignore.

EIGHTH: First Appeal needed last and packs potent late wallop on "A" game; call based on price potential. Mentality dueled through sizzling splits when a game third in last; front-running threat. Eloweasel runs late and could be in the garden spot if fractions get hot and hectic.

NINTH: Dab makes peak start of form cycle after flashing improved speed in last; must escape AE list. Latin Love Bug, also below AE line, was a clear-cut second in last; must consider if he scratches in to body of race. Wheresthebarber made incremental improvement on the numbers last time; very interesting. Construct drops, adds blinkers and moves to dirt; must consider. Merger of Banks owns speed but lacks heart; must take the good with the bad.
