Jermaine Johnson’s 2024 season is over after two weeks — the New York Jets’ Pro Bowl defensive end suffered a torn Achilles during Sunday’s 24-17 win over the Tennessee Titans.
Monday’s results only confirmed what was suspected the day before after Johnson fell to the turf when he planted his right foot awkwardly.
“Thank everyone for all the prayers and support!” Johnson posted on Monday. “This is not a dark time for me , although there will be dark days ahead, this is God’s way for me to not only grow as a man, person and player but to also inspire others to as well!! 11 will be back and better, BOOK IT.”
He was carted off the field while being consoled by emotional teammates, including a hug from fellow defensive lineman Solomon Thomas.
“It was super hard [to see],” Thomas said (h/t SNY). “Jermaine doesn’t play like every player in the league. He plays really hard. He plays hard every down… he loves his teammates. Losing 11 is like losing the heartbeat for this team. My heart breaks for him personally.”
In just his third NFL season, Johnson had already developed into one of the most steady presences within the Jets’ defense. A strong sophomore campaign last year saw him post 7.5 sacks with 55 combined tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and seven passes defended.
His role within the unit was going to be even more vital this season with Haason Reddick — the Jets’ marquee offseason trade acquisition — holding out for a new contract after the organization parted ways with Bryce Huff and John Franklin-Myers.
With no resolution in sight for the Reddick situation, the Jets will have to rely on Will McDonald to step in for Johnson. The organization will hope that Sunday’s three-sack performance is just a preview of things to come, which would help soften the blow of losing an integral part of their defensive line.
Takkarist McKinley and undrafted rookie Braiden McGregor will also see an uptick in snaps for the time being.
