Shortly after the New York Knicks signed Landry Shamet, the team signed 13-year veteran forward Marcus Morris Sr. to an Exhibit 9 contract as well.
An Exhibit 9 contract does not guarantee Morris a spot on the roster yet. He will be invited to training camp and must compete for the 15th and final spot on the’ roster against Shamet and Chuma Okeke, who are also on non-guaranteed deals.
This will be Morris’s second tenure with the team. He last played for them during the 2019-20 season, appearing in 43 games. That year was his best scoring season, as he averaged a career-high 19.6 points per game.
Since leaving the Knicks in 2020, Morris has played on three different teams, and his minutes have significantly decreased over the years. This past season, he played in 49 games for two teams, the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 6.4 points and 2.7 rebounds.
If granted a roster spot, this addition adds even more depth to the team. Here is a potential preview of the 2024-25 depth chart:
PG: Jalen Brunson, Miles Mcbride, Tyler Kolek, Cam Payne
kSG: Mikal Bridges, Donte DiVincenzo, Pacome Dadiet
SF: OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Keita Bates-Diop, Chuma Okeke
PF: Julius Randle, Marcus Morris Sr., Precious Achiuwa
C: Mitchell Robinson, Jericho Sims, Ariel Hukporti
As mentioned before, a few players from this list will be competing for the 15th roster spot on the team. SNY’s Ian Begley stated that Morris “..has a real chance to make the NYK’s regular season roster” in a tweet on X.
Given his history with the Knicks and his much-needed presence as a veteran enforcer, it may be likely that Morris makes the team.
