Winning is one way to endear yourself to Mets fans, and both Tyler Naquin and Daniel Vogelbach found that out on Thursday. The two new additions to the lineup combined to go 4-8 with three RBI and three runs scored while clubbing three home runs between them.

Tyler Naquin was the first of the two new Mets to get in on the fun, clubbing a solo home run to right field off of Kyle Wright to give the Mets a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning.

After Pete Alonso hit a two-run home run in the third inning, Daniel Vogelbach got in on the fun by crushing a line drive home run to right.

The five-run cushion proved to be all that starter Carlos Carrasco needed; although, things did get interesting in the fifth. After throwing four scoreless innings, Carrasco gave up a single to former Met Travis d’Arnaud to start the fifth and allowed him to advance to second on a wild pitch. Carrasco was able to retire the new two Braves hitters before Michael Harris II singled to score d’Arnaud and then Ronald Acuña Jr. clubbed a two-run home run.

However, it was Naquin who answered the call again, taking a 3-2 breaking ball to the opposite field for another home run.

This is exactly the reason that the Mets traded for the two left-handed hitters at the deadline.  On the season, Naquin is now hitting .277/.339/.522 off of right-handed pitching with a 132 wRC+, seven home runs, and 31 RBI in 159 at-bats. He’s 6-18 with two home runs and a 1.167 OPS in his five games with the Mets.

Meanwhile, Daniel Vogelbach is an on-base machine. The burly slugger has a 15% walk rate on the season, which has propelled a .354 on-base percentage and .804 OPS. Those numbers increase to .384 and .934 respectively against right-handed pitching, which is why the Mets are planning to platoon him with Darin Ruf

The additions didn’t get high praise from all fans and analysts but New York GM Billy Eppler certainly went to bed happy last night after watching Edwin Diaz throw two shutout innings to slam the door on a 6-4 victory. It was Diaz’s 24th save of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.44.

The two frontrunners in the NL East will square off again on Friday at 7:10 pm E.T. with Taijuan Walker pitching for New York against Ian Anderson for Atlanta.

With the Braves only slated to throw one left-handed pitcher the entire weekend, the Mets’ new additions will have plenty more chances to endear themselves to their new hometown fans.
