The Nets signed head coach Jacque Vaughn to a multi-year contract extension on Tuesday, ensuring he will be in Brooklyn for the foreseeable future. Vaughn has been running the Nets bench since Nov. 1 after the organization parted ways with Steve Nash and he was given the full-time gig eight days later.

The team did not release specifics of the contract, but ESPN reported that the new deal will take him through the 2026-27 season.

Vaughn had been a big part of the turnaround the Nets underwent after a very rocky start to the year with losses piling up and drama off the court dominating the headlines. Under Vaughn’s leadership, the Nets went 32-19 since Nov. 1 which is the fifth-best record in the NBA during that span.

He also helped lead the Nets to a 12-1 record during the month of December, representing the winningest month in franchise history and earning Vaughn the first Coach of the Month honor in his career.

“Jacque has made an immediate and immeasurable impact on our entire organization since assuming the role of head coach earlier this season,” Nets General Manager Sean Marks said in a statement. “On the court, he’s clearly demonstrated his leadership through his ability to connect and communicate at a very high level while displaying tremendous instincts for the game. As a person, they don’t come any better than Jacque. His character is impeccable, and there is not a better representative for our team and our borough. We are thrilled to have Jacque lead the Nets for years to come.”

However, Vaughn will have his hands full going forward as the Nets retool following a massive shakeup in the days leading up to the NBA trade deadline. The Nets dealt Superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving ending the superstar era in Brooklyn and taking the organization in a new direction.

It will be on Vaughn, along with Marks, to help figure out where the organization goes from here and in the short term try and guide the team into the playoffs. Brooklyn is occupying the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and the mandate remains for the team to reach the playoffs.

The Nets are hoping to avoid falling into a play-in round position and it will be on Vaughn to figure a rotation that works for the team going forward. He may have started to crack the code going into the NBA All-Star break when he started Brooklyn’s four trade deadline acquisitions — Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith — and Nic Claxton, and had Cam Thomas lead the second unit off the bench.

This is Vaughn’s second go around as Nets coach after serving a short 10-game stint in 2019-20.
