The New York Red Bulls have no interest in English Championship side Norwich City defender midfielder Shane Duffy, sources tell amNewYork.
Chris Reeve of BBC Norfolk first reported on April 9 that an offer from the Red Bulls was “on the table” for the 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international, who has spent 14 of the last 15 seasons playing in England for Burnley, Scunthorpe, Everton, Yeovil Town, Blackburn, Brighton, and Fulham before joining the Canaries in 2023. He spent the 2020-21 season with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
One source told amNewYork, however, went as far as to say that there was “absolutely not” any legs to those rumors.
The Red Bulls have been decimated by injuries, especially within the back line, which has made the concept of nabbing additional depth a logical one with the MLS transfer deadline looming on April 23.
While Cameron Harper made his return from a knee injury during Saturday’s goalless draw to Orlando City, New York is still without defenders Kyle Duncan, Raheem Edwards, and Marcel Morales. Former captain and center-back Sean Nealis has also played just three minutes in the last two matches, though he has not appeared on the injury report as of yet.
Despite the Red Bulls’ incredibly thin depth, there does not appear to be an abundance of haste coming from team brass with a little over a week remaining to make moves. Instead, head coach Sandro Schwarz is treating the impending return of some players from the injured list as transfer-deadline acquisitions.
“We will have some roster movement for sure because some injured players are coming back,” Schwarz said. “Then for us, that seems like a new player for this season, and that’s great… It’s my feeling that they are new players now for this transfer window, but for summer? I don’t answer that question.”
