Outdoor movies in NYC: Where and when to catch a film under the stars

Summer may be slipping away but it’s still the perfect time to take movie night outside.

Public parks and rooftops offer free and ticketed outdoor screenings across the city.

Prepare your picnic blanket to watch your favorite films under the stars. 

Skylawn rooftop bar at Embassy Suites

The Rooftop Cinema Club holds outdoor screenings twice a night at Embassy Suites. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and audience members get wireless headphones so they don’t miss anything. Tickets are about $25 online.

  • Sept. 23 — "Labyrinth" at 7 p.m.
  • Sept. 24 — "Groundhog Day" at 7 p.m. and "The Greatest Showman" sing-a-long at 9:45 p.m.
  • Sept. 25 — "An Officer and a Gentleman" at 9:45 p.m.
  • Sept. 27 — "Stand by Me" at 7 p.m. and "Us" at 9:45 p.m.
  • Sept. 28 — "Dirty Dancing" at 7 p.m. and "Ghost" at 9:45 p.m.
  • Sept. 29 — "Little Shop of Horrors" at 7 p.m.

Parklife Outdoor Cinema

Grab some tacos and cocktails at Parklife (636 Degraw St., Brooklyn) while you catch this free movie series that begins at sunset (around 8 p.m.) on Wednesdays.

  • Sept. 25 — "The Goonies"

NYC Parks film screenings

The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation regularly holds free film screenings at its many parks around dusk, which with the right weather is a perfect way to spend your night. The following are our picks: 

  • Wednesday:  "Robin Hood" at 7 p.m. at Washington Square Park

  • Thursday: "My Little Pony" at 7 p.m. at Inwood Hill Park

  • Friday: "Love in the Time of Cholera" at 6:45 p.m. in Maria Hernandez Park; "Claudine" at 7 p.m. in Marcus Garvey Park; "Space Jam" at 8 p.m. in Concrete Plant Park

  • Saturday: "Avengers: Endgame" at 6:45 p.m. in Herbert von King Park; "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" at Samuel Seabury Playground

Rooftop Reds

This commercial rooftop vineyard (at 299 Sands St. in Brooklyn) holds film screenings on Thursdays (unless otherwise noted) when the weather cooperates. Movies start after 8 p.m., but there’s a $30 admission fee that includes 2 slices of pizza from Il Porto Pizzeria.

  • Sept. 26 — "West Side Story" at 6:30 p.m.
  • Sept. 29 — "Singin’ in the Rain" at 6:30 p.m.
  • Oct. 3 & 4 — "Hocus Pocus" at 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 6 — "To Kill a Mockingbird" at 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 13 — "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" at 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 17 — "Paranormal Activity" at 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 24 — "Seven" at 6:10 p.m.
  • Oct. 31 — "Silence of the Lambs" at 6 p.m.

Habana

Not much is better than pairing Latin food with the great outdoors. Every Sunday at 8 p.m., through the end of October, Habana Outpost (757 Fulton St. in Brooklyn) is using its huge outdoor space as a theater of sorts.

  • Sept. 29 — "Paid In Full"
  • Oct. 6 — "Goodfellas"
  • Oct. 13 — "Sister Act"
  • Oct. 20 — "Scream"
  • Oct. 27 — "Hocus Pocus"

Rooftop Films

Rooftop Films travels around the city’s most scenic places to offer ticketed and free films. Each screening is at a different time and place, so check the schedule before you head out.

  • Oct. 25 & 26 — "Nightfall: Lovesick" at Green-Wood Cemetery – Tickets are $80.
