A TLC driver careened into a Manhattan scaffold on Monday evening, leaving split wood and twisted metal in its wake.
According to police sources, the collision unfolded on the corner of 29th Street and 1st Avenue in Kips Bay at around 5:04 p.m. on June 16.
Police reported that the 63-year-old driver of a Black Lincoln town car attempted to make a left turn and powered into the shed, causing it to topple onto his vehicle. The front of the vehicle was left with its bumper fallen off and its guts exposed. There were no passengers inside at the time.
“I think he stepped on the gas instead of the brake to avoid a bike,” an eyewitness told amNewYork.
Officers from the 13th Precinct responded to the incident. The driver was unharmed and remained at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
A source familiar with the investigation reported that removal of the vehicle could cause the rest of the construction to collapse, requiring it to stay in place until it can be repaired.
Christine says she lives in the apartment building the scaffolding surrounds and told amNewYork that it was erected because maintenance is being performed on the balconies.
“It’s been up about a year, I think it’s taking too long. It’s scary,” Christine said. “Maybe it was just bad installation because you see the column is crooked. It could have happened to anyone.”
Members of the Buildings Department was on the scene investigating.
