Broad St. debris
A woman walking on Broad St. near Exchange Pl. at 8:15 a.m. Wed., April 15 on her way to work was struck on the head by a slab of wood that fell from a nearby building, police said. The victim, 33, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
Dominick St. mugging
A group of three young men confronted a 20-year-old man walking on Dominick St. near Sixth Ave. around 3:50 p.m. Wed., April 15 when one of the trio punched the victim in the face, grabbed his cell phone and fled with the two accomplices, police said.
Accused stalker arrested
Police arrested Jose Garcia, 27, of Rivington St., on Fri., April 10 and charged him with stalking a woman youth counselor in the small church at 162 Attorney St., between Stanton and Houston Sts. for more than two years,
The victim counseled Garcia twice a week in 2005 but in June 2006 he sent her a letter saying, “I don’t want you to get married. I’m going to hurt you and hurt myself,” according to the police complaint. Garcia continued to hang around the church between March and September 2008 and made as many as five calls a day to the victim’s cell phone, saying in substance that no one else could have her and that he would hurt her because she wasn’t nurturing him, according to the complaint. Garcia approached another woman counselor recently and told her he felt he would do something “very bad,” police said. When Garcia was arrested on April 10 in front of the church, he had a brass knuckle knife with a 12-inch blade in his right pants leg and was also charged with weapons possession, police said.
Pre-school incident
The owner of a private pre-school at 22 Ericsson Pl. told Downtown Express last week that the former teacher who walked into the school on the night of April 2 had taken her own paycheck and her own personnel record but not any information about any of the children.
Ayala Marcktell, the owner of Tribeca Community School, said on Thurs., April 16 that the school pressed charges against the woman because the personnel file was not hers to take. Although she had a key to the building, she was not authorized to enter late after school hours with no one on duty, he said.
He added that the woman had been dismissed after seven weeks of employment because she was not a good fit for the school and that she had not done anything wrong.
Police had previously said the teacher was accused of taking the school roster. Police did not respond to questions about the progress of the case on Wednesday.
