Rick Pitino and St. John’s continued to expand their roster, landing their third player in the transfer portal in former Stanford guard Oziyah Sellers.

The senior averaged 13.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game with the Cardinal last season. He shot 45.1% from the field and an efficient 40.1% from behind the arc.

The 6-foot-5 guard is known for his lights-out shooting from 3-point land. He joins an offense that struggled to shoot from deep last season, but still managed to earn a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

“We are super excited to have Oziyah in our program,” Pitino said. “Not only does he bring great experience and tremendous outside shooting but his workout on his visit was incredible. Oziyah has terrific size and an unbelievable attitude. He’s a great addition for Johnnies Basketball this season.”

Pitino’s squad leaned on suffocating defense, winning on the glass, and creating points in transition to win their games. Sellers joins Arizona State’s Joson Sanon, who will be paired with  Zuby Ejiofor and Providence transfer Bryce Hopkins, and can potentially take the Red Storm to the next level.

“They had a big need for 3-point shooters, and just showing me their offense and plays they run are things I feel I would fit well into,” Sellers said. “They do a lot of ball screens as well. I feel like that’s something that can take my game to another level.”

There’s no guarantee that every player will succeed, but if the Johnnies can shoot the 3-ball efficiently and combine that with their elite defense, they’ll be imposing opponents.
