Police in Midtown are searching for a subway slasher who randomly attacked a commuter at the 47th-50th Streets station early Monday, authorities said.
According to police sources, a 24-year-old man was attempting to buy a MetroCard from a machine at the station located below Rockefeller Plaza at around 1:20 a.m. on April 15 when the unidentified male suspect approached him from behind.
Cops say the assailant used a sharp object to slash the man across the right side of his face and in the left leg. Following the assault, the perpetrator fled the station to parts unknown.
The victim later told police he did not know his attacker and was seemingly targeted for no discernible reason. According to sources familiar with the case, the victim also said that the incident happened so fast that he was unable see the weapon used in the attack.
Police said the victim suffered a severe gash that stretched from under his ear down his cheek, requiring stitches. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital for treatment.
The NYPD reported that the suspect was last seen wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and brown pants. Images of the perpetrator were released Monday evening.
