Port Authority officials are mandating higher cleaning standards at their facilities in New York and New Jersey, including airports, the PATH System and the Oculus, in an effort to stem the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Workers will increase cleanings of restrooms and often-touched surfaces, such as handrails, ticket terminals, elevators and door handles, with EPA- and CDC-approved cleaning supplies, according to Port Authority.
The heightened sanitation standards will be effective immediately, Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said.
“Safety and security are the top priority for the Port Authority as we work every day to keep the region moving,” O’Toole said.
In addition to the increased cleaning, health guidance announcements will be on display in stations and terminals, reminding travelers to follow CDC guidelines by washing their hands, avoiding ill people and not touching their faces or mouths.
As of March 3, the New York State Department of Health has investigated 41 people suspected of having the COVID-19 coronavirus. Two people tested positive for the virus in the state, with one in New York City.
