Nurses from NYC’s Montefiore and Mount Sinai Hospitals began their second day of their strike outside of Montefiore Bronx and Mount Sinai in Manhattan on Tuesday.
The picket line began at 7 a.m. and will continue until 7 p.m. every day until agreements are reached, according to a NYSNA press release.
NYSNA nurses at three other hospitals ratified new contracts on Monday, NYSNA press says. Nurses at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, Richmond University Medical Center, and BronxCare all approved new contracts.
On Monday, more than 1,000 nurses picketed outside Mount Sinai Hospital on Monday to demand safer nurse staffing levels and for a pay increase. NYSNA attempted to reach an agreement at the bargaining table. NYSNA is the state’s largest union representing registered nurses.
“We are asking Mount Sinai to provide the safe ratios for patient care here and also provide safe enforcement for staffing,” NYSNA President Nancy Hagans told amNewYork Metro. “So far Mount Sinai has not called in to continue bargaining.”
Montefiore released its latest offers to NYSNA Tuesday morning. The offers include staffing increases in the emergency department and in labor and delivery rooms.
Montefiore had promised to create over 170 new nursing positions, per the healthcare system. Both Mount Sinai and Montefiore offered a 19.1% wage increase over three years that was agreed to at eight other hospitals, including Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West, per announcements.
Montefiore is back at the bargaining table today, but Mount Sinai has not yet announced negotiations.
