NYC dog runs: Best spots for your pooch to let loose

Sometimes, a dog just want to run. This can be tough for cosmopolitan canines confined by concrete.

Fortunately, nooked in many of NYC's parks are dog runs -- fenced-off areas where pooches can legally shed their leashes and scamper with their four-legged brethren.

Here are spots for Fido to be free in all five boroughs.

Manhattan: Upper West Side

At Homer's Run in Inwood Hill Park, you'll find plenty of events organized by the Friends of Inwoof group. Join the pack at Seaman Avenue and Isham Street, north of the flagpole.

Manhattan: Upper East Side

The Carl Schurz Park Dog Run boasts two separate runs: one for bigger pups, the other for smaller canines. And there are great views for everyone, from East End Avenue to the East River, from Gracie Square (East 84th Street) to 89th Street.

Big and small dogs are segregated at the East River Esplanade at 63rd Street Dog Run, which covers about 4,000 square feet beneath FDR Drive.

Hudson River Park Dog Run (North Chelsea): Pier 84 at West 44th Street

Manhattan: Lower West Side

Though it's on the small side, Chelsea Waterside Park Dog Run at 11th Avenue and 22nd Street offers hills to tire out your pup plus drinking water (for them, not you) during the warmer months.

As you head to the Corlears Hook Park Dog Run, enjoy fabulous views of the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges. You'll find the designated doggy area at Cherry Street and Jackson Street, on the north side of the park building.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 Dog Run (Furman Street and Atlantic Avenue) boasts canine-friendly water fountains and a doggie shower -- plus beautiful views for human companions. Nearby Main Street Dog Run is reopening in 2015 after renovations.
