Andrew Makowsky, a Village resident for 35 years and an antiquarian bookseller, died suddenly on Tues. Feb. 3 at the age of 60.

He was working at Tower Records on E. Fourth St. at Broadway when he was stricken with a massive heart attack, said his wife, Victoria.

In the 1970s, he was the manager of the Elgin Theater on Eighth Ave. at 19th St., an avant-garde film house that became the Joyce Theater, a modern dance venue.

The son of Gertrude and Harold Makowsky, he was born in Newark, N.J., and graduated from Milburn High School in New Jersey. He studied at American University in Washington, D.C.

He was an avid photographer whose work has been seen at various Village locations. “He was a superb photographer,” said Madeline Kripke, a friend of 33 years. “He was really a master of aesthetics and lived for beauty — visual beauty and classical music,” Kripke said.

In addition to his wife and two daughters, Olivia, 10, and Chloe, 7, a brother, Michael, of Las Vegas, also survives.

The Greenwich Village Funeral Home, 119 Bleecker St., was in charge of arrangements. Burial was Feb. 6 at B’nai Abraham Memorial Park in Union, N.J., following a service at the funeral home.
