Sponsored by Target, the family event was held at the South Street Seaport and featured free entertainment such as music and clowns along with appearances by famous childhood characters like Bob the Builder, Elmo and Cookie Monster. The night capped off with a performance by the rock group They Might Be Giants and a fireworks display. Children’s Day NYC began in 1993 on the World Trade Center plaza, with the goal of bringing family life back Downtown after the first attack, and was held there every year through 2001.
