Majors – Giants vs. Astros
The Giants handed the Astros their first defeat of the season winning their game by a score of 5-0 behind the strong pitching of Sam Gilberg. He pitched 6 innings, striking out 10 and giving up only 1 walk and 2 hits to the Astros. Jake Shapiro and Wyatt Leach were the only players to get hits for the Astros. Max Sternberg, Brandon Diaz and Corey Greenblatt led the offense for the Giants with 2 hits each. Tim Rossi of the Astros turned a nice double play at third base and Lucas Frajndlich shined defensively behind the plate for the Astros, throwing out a runner at third and making a major league tag at the plate to turn back a run.
Majors — Red Sox vs. Rockies
The Rockies got a strong pitching performance from Sean Wils who pitched all 6 innings in a 6-2 win over the Sox Friday May 14. Hitting stars for the Rockies were Wils who reached the outfield fences with a huge 2-R.B.I. double, Felix Chmiel, Ryan Rakower and Ridley Younge who all had multiple hits.
Catcher Harry Cammer made a spectacular diving catch of a foul pop up. Younge also contributed with two run-saving plays at third base. The game ended with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate when Justin Basso snagged a line drive at second base.
Majors — Rockies vs. Cubs
The 12-10 slugfest won by the Cubs featured strong hitting and excellent defense from both teams in a Sunday game. The Rockies’ runs were fueled by the strong hitting and heady baserunning of Kyle Maer, Dexter Zimet and Sean Wils, who tripled, reaching the fences in his second consecutive game. Maer also contributed with his glove, running down a long flyball to centerfield and making a circus catch to save at least two runs. Sam Daniels aided the Rockies’ cause with a strong bat and a near flawless relief pitching performance. The Cubs were able to turn back a threat in the bottom of the last inning stopping a number of hardhit balls off the Rockies’ bats.
