Elizabeth Ivory Greene, former Republican district leader and lifelong Village resident, died Jan. 30 at St. Vincent’s Hospital at the age of 77.
Hospitalized for two weeks for arterial surgery, she died of complications, said her son, Edgar Greene.
She was the daughter of Elizabeth Post Price Ivory and Percy Van Eman Ivory, an artist whose home and studio was in the Village. She went to elementary school at City and Country Day School on W. 12th St. and to Washington Irving High School. She then went to Bennington College in Vermont.
Elizabeth Ivory married James Benno Greene at the Salmagundi Club in 1953 and raised her family in the Village. Her husband died in 1968.
Active in the Republican Party, she served as district leader more than 20 years ago and ran unsuccessfully in 1990 as the Republican candidate to fill William Passannante’s Assembly seat. She worked at the city Board of Elections from 1991 until she retired last year.
In addition to her son Edgar, of the Village, another son, James Benno Greene III, of Texas, and a daughter, Elizabeth Tylawsky, of Connecticut, also survive.
A memorial service will be held at the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Ave. from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. on Feb. 25.
