Municipal food fest

Slow Foods U.S.A , a non-profit educational organization dedicated to supporting and celebrating the food traditions of North America, is hosting their second Urban Harvest this Sunday to celebrate the regional farmers, artisans and chefs bringing diversity to your dinner plate.

The New Amsterdam Market at the New York City Municipal Building Arcade, 1 Centre St., will feature artisan foods including various cheeses, wines, pickles and preserves, heirloom apples, hand crafted ciders, grass-fed meats and pastured poultry. Those aiming to consume more conscientiously but cannot resist a traditional junk food staple, can look for products like farm raised, farm made potato chips. Over 40 farmers and producers from as far as Buffalo, N.Y., Vermont and New Hampshire will be bringing their artisan foods to Lower Manhattan. Robert LaValva, director of the market, defined artisan foods as “handmade with a concern for quality over quantity.” “What makes this unique is that since this is a one day event we can really recruit people from quite a long ways away,” he said.

The market will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Entrance is free, but tasting tickets are six for $20.
