No more Schwartz on Church

Friday was the last day for pedestrian safety officials from Sam Schwartz Engineering to patrol the corners of Church and Vesey and Church and Liberty Streets, two of the busiest intersections in the city. The Port Authority awarded the pedestrian management contract to securities firm AlliedBarton back in August.

“Schwartz did a very good job getting this off the ground, and we appreciate that, but ultimately we believe AlliedBarton has a commitment, and we’re going to hold them to it to provide the same level of service,” said Steve Sigmund, chief of public and government affairs at the Port Authority.

In a statement released Friday, Schwartz said, “We have crossed more than 60 million people through the busiest and most complex crossings in the nation in the past 18 months without a single incident. Two of our own were brushed by vehicles but not a hair on a civilian’s head was shaken.”
