Officials rally against Section 8 cuts

Representatives Jerrold Nadler and Nydia Velazquez and City Councilmember Margarita Lopez rallied with tenants and affordable-housing activists at Pitt St. on the Lower East Side by the El Pueblo Nuevo housing development last Saturday to protest the Bush administration’s plan to cut funding for Section 8 federally subsidized-housing vouchers. The local politicians say up to 148,000 vouchers for individuals would be eliminated. Other Section 8 vouchers that are attached to housing projects would remain, but individual vouchers that can be shifted to different locations would be eliminated under the plan.
