PA cops help deliver baby at Holland Tunnel

A Sunset Park couple expecting to have their baby in a Philadelphia hospital got an early surprise near the Holland Tunnel yesterday with the help of Port Authority police officers.

Ying Chen, 21, and Kai Tang, 24, welcomed their baby girl, delivered at the New Jersey side of the Holland Tunnel around 6:45 a.m. Port Authority officers Catherine Prior and Luis Alvardo spotted Tang waving for help outside his Nissan sedan, where Chen was in labor.

After the two officers provided Chen first aid, Port Authority officer Matthew Smith, a trained EMT, responded and helped deliver the baby girl with an obstetric kit and oxygen from a nearby Port Authority police booth. Smith cut the baby’s umbilical cord, according to Port Authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo. Chen and her daughter were taken to Jersey City Medical Center in good condition.
