Hudson Sq. shooting
A trivial argument between two workers at a residential tower under construction at 499 Greenwich St. between Canal and Spring Sts. ended with a gunshot that grazed one of them in the head, according to Capt. Michael Hurley, commanding officer of the First Precinct.
The victim, Juan Isazo-Mazo, 33, of Queens, was treated and released at St. Vincent’s hospital after the shooting, which was on Tues. July 20 around 1 p.m. There had been bad feeling between the two workers prior to the July 20 argument, which was over an apple, Hurley said. The other man’s father, who came to the site with a gun after his son phoned him about the argument, is the suspected shooter. But no one had been charged yet in the incident by press time on July 22.
Earlier on the day of the shooting, the Carpenters Union had erected a 7-ft. inflatable rat in front of an adjacent construction site protesting non-union labor. However, the argument was not related to any labor dispute, Hurley said.
Subway death
Jose Echevarria, 49, of Brooklyn, fell to his death beneath a Brooklyn bound J train in the Broadway-Nassau station at 6:30 p.m. Tues. July 20, police said. The victim fell to the tracks while trying to climb over the gate between two cars and was struck when the train left the station, police said.
Gang assault
A group of six men attacked a pedestrian on Church St. near Lispenard at 2 a.m. Sun. July 11, hit him with their fists, brass knuckles and a pipe and then fled, police said. The victim was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital with serious head wounds.
L.E.S. bag grab
A pregnant woman, 39, was walking with her two children at the corner of Cherry and Market Sts. at 11 a.m. Sat. July 18 when an unknown assailant came up behind her and grabbed her bag, police said. The suspect fled in a tan minivan after he knocked the victim down when she tried to hang onto the bag, police said. The woman was treated at NYU Downtown Hospital for a hand injury but her children were unhurt, police said. The incident fits a pattern of recent robberies in the Fifth Precinct, police said.
Manhole fire
A Con Edison manhole fire on Varick St. near Vandam St. at 8:30 a.m. Fri. July 16 damaged a parked car but did not cause any power outage or injury. A Con Edison spokesperson said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
Car burglaries
A thief smashed the driver’s side window of a car parked in front of 51 White St. on Wed. July 14 and made off with a laptop computer, several cell phones and clothes, police said.
A woman who parked her car on Church near Walker St. the same day returned at 5:30 p.m. to find the driver’s side window smashed and her laptop and camera missing, police said
Maiden robbery
The manager of a ground floor store at 7 Maiden La. near Broadway told police he was changing in a back room shortly after 9 a.m. on Mon. July 12 when he heard the cash register drawer open and went to investigate. The robber who was taking money out of the till pulled a knife and fled with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.
Brawlers charged
Two men who got into an argument that came to blows at a garage at 56 Fulton St. on Sunday afternoon on July 11 charged each other with assault after they were arrested, police said. One of the suspects, Rafael Pimenter, hit the other, Leslie Betts, with a stick, police said. Both are from Brooklyn.
