Village donnybrook
A party in the basement of Our Lady of Pompei Church on Friday night Nov. 10 celebrating the release of a new hip-hop CD got out of hand about 3 a.m. the following morning when a fight broke out and spilled onto Bleecker St., police said.
“There must have been from 150 to 200 people in the street and we arrested nine males between the ages of 17 and 22 for assault,” said Detective Mike Singer, Sixth Precinct community affairs officer. A Lower East group rented the church basement and all those arrested are from that neighborhood, Singer said.
Charged with assault were Hatiris Marmoc, 22; Sandy Guzman, 19; Joel Pena, 22; Jason Pena, 19; Junnie Torres, 19; Galvin Burgos, 17; Glenn Burgos, 18; Anubis Riva, 17; and Ariel Mendez, 21.
Car hits pedestrians
A woman driving south on Broadway on Monday evening Nov. 13 lost control of her car at E. 12th St. and struck and injured four pedestrians before crashing into a lamppost at E. 11th St., police said.
One man was struck crossing Broadway shortly before 6 p.m. and was tossed onto the car windshield. The car then jumped the curb and hit another man in front of a diner, whose window was smashed, raining broken glass down on the two victims. Two women on the sidewalk were hit shortly before the car crashed into the lamppost.
One man was taken to Beth Israel Hospital in critical condition and the other victims went to Bellevue. A fifth pedestrian was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The driver told police she mistakenly stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, according to published reports. No summons was issued and police were investigating the case.
Stabbed at club
Two men who were involved in a fight inside Club Myst on W. 28th St. at 10th Ave. around 3 a.m. Sat. Nov. 11 were in their limo going home to Queens when they discovered they had been stabbed, according to police. One man, 27, was stabbed in the leg and his friend, 29 was stabbed in the stomach and hit over the head with a bottle. They were treated at Jamaica Hospital.
Subway slashing
An argument between two strangers on a Brooklyn-bound L train after it left Union Square at 2:15 a.m. Tues. Nov. 7 escalated when one of them pulled a knife and slashed his adversary in the face, chest and hand, police said. The slasher fled at the Third Ave. station and the victim, 19, was taken to Bellevue hospital in stable condition, police said.
Seek to replace judge
Joyce David, the new lawyer representing Darryl Littlejohn — the bouncer at The Falls, the former bar at 218 Lafayette St., who is charged with the Feb. 23 murder of Imette St. Guillen — demanded on Nov. 13 that Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Cheryl Chambers step down from the case.
David, representing Littlejohn without fee, said Judge Chambers mishandled assigning defense attorneys in the case. David also contended that Littlejohn was “railroaded” by police and the court.
The brutalized body of St. Guillen, a student at John Jay College, was found Feb. 24 in the wetland off the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, not far from Littlejohn’s home.
Bite of lunch
A Queens woman, 26, having a late lunch at S.O.B.’s, at 204 Varick St., on Sunday afternoon Nov. 3 got into a fight with her former boyfriend who bit her lower lip, grabbed her bag with her cell phone and credit cards and fled, police said.
Robbery arrest
Employees in the third-floor office of Soho Publishing at 232 Spring St. stopped a man who walked in at 2:40 p.m. Oct. 31, grabbed a woman’s bag from a desk and tried to flee with it after pushing the bag’s owner and two other employees to the floor, police said. The suspect, Pedro Alicea, 38, was charged with robbery.
Sliwa case sentence
A Manhattan federal court judge on Nov. 13 sentenced Michael Yannotti, 43, to 20 years in prison in a racketeering charge not related to the 1992 kidnap shooting of Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, in a stolen cab on Avenue A.
Yannotti was acquitted last year of the Sliwa shooting and there was a hung jury on the kidnap charge. But Yannotti was convicted on loan-sharking and racketeering counts.
Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin, however, agreed with the prosecutor that the Sliwa shooting should be factored into the racketeering and loan-sharking sentence because of “ample evidence” of Yannotti’s involvement in the shooting.
Federal prosecutors had failed three times to convict John Gotti Jr. of having ordered the Sliwa shooting. Sliwa, however, intends to pursue a civil case charging Gotti with a role in the shooting.
Bank robbed
A man who walked into a Sovereign Bank branch on Park Ave. S. at E. 20th St. at 10:30 a.m. Wed. Nov. 8 passed a note to a teller demanding money and fled with $900, police said.
Car break-in
A woman visitor from Philadelphia who parked her car on Sixth Ave. near MacDougal St. at 6:45 p.m. Tues. Nov. 7 returned 15 minutes later and found the window on the driver’s side smashed and her laptop computer and iPod gone, police said.
