Bike-path killer driver
Eugenio Cidron, 28, was sentenced on Jan. 3 to three and a half to 10 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter in connection with the December 2006 death of a bicycle rider struck on the Hudson River Park bike path at Clarkson St.
Cidron was driving from an office party at Chelsea Piers when he turned down the bike path instead of the West Side Highway and struck and killed Eric Ng, 22, a public school math teacher. Cidron, a Queens father of two, tested 0.16, twice the legal limit, in a field alcohol test, and had driven about a mile down the bike path when he struck the victim.
Murder sentence
Stephen Sakai, the bouncer who was charged with the May 2006 shooting outside Opus 22, the club at 559 W. 22nd St., where one man was killed and three others were injured, was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison on Jan. 3 for killing two associates, stabbing one and shooting the other, a year earlier in Brooklyn. Sakai, whose real name is Stephen Sanders, is scheduled to go on trial for the Chelsea shooting on Jan. 28.
Girls accuse teacher
Richard Dulberg, 32, a teacher at the High School for the Physical City, 55 E. 25th St., surrendered to police on Jan. 3 after four girl students, 14 and 15 years old, accused him of soliciting dates with them in return for good grades. He was charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, which has been investigating the charges. Dulberg has denied the charges and is free pending a Feb. 13 court appearance.
Arrested in subway
Transit police arrested Kevin Romero, 23, while he was getting on a northbound train at 5 a.m. on Jan. 1 at 14th St. and Eighth Ave. and charged him with grand larceny for snatching a cell phone from a man standing on the platform. The suspect did not have the cell phone when he was arrested but was in possession of credit cards that were not his, police said.
Highway robbery
Police arrested Catherine Patterson, 44, shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sun., Dec. 30, and charged her with taking $150 from a cab driver in front of 7 W. 14th St., after the driver rebuffed her amorous advances.
The suspect, a Brooklyn resident, got into the front seat of the cab while it was stopped at a red light, and asked the driver to kiss her and then said she wanted to have sex with him because she liked Indian men, according to a New York Post report. When the driver refused, the suspect grabbed a cup with the money and fled on foot. The driver gave chase and the suspect was apprehended and held for police.
Cafe bizarre
Police arrested Marcario Martinez, 24, and charged him with assault in connection with a stabbing at a cafe on W. 13th St. just west of Eighth Ave. at 5:15 a.m. Sun., Dec. 30. The suspect, who was sitting with a friend, got into an argument with an employee that turned into a fight. When Martinez’s friend tried to break it up, Martinez stabbed him in the arm with a kitchen knife, according to reports. The friend was treated at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Martinez was booked for second-degree assault.
Jewelry burglary
Burglars broke through a sheetrock wall in the rear of a jewelry store at Canal and Greene Sts. at about 11 a.m. on Jan. 1 and stole jewelry valued at $124,000 from the display cases, police said.
Jail for assault
Israel Corchado, 33, pleaded guilty on Jan. 4, to third-degree assault for punching a man and hitting him on the head with a hammer outside the victim’s apartment at 77 Avenue C near E. Sixth St. Corchado was sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years probation and is subject to an order of protection barring him from approaching the victim, 20, who had become friends with Corchado’s former girlfriend.
Stolen bags and wallets
A woman patron of The Plumm, 246 W. 14th St., told police she left her bag on a chair at 1:30 a.m. Sat., Jan. 5, while she went to dance and found it was stolen when she returned. A woman patron of STK, 26 Little W. 12th St., had her bag stolen while at the club on New Year’s Eve, police said. A woman who had been celebrating at an unspecified Village nightspot passed out on the southwest corner of W. Fourth and Cornelia Sts. at 1 a.m. New Year’s Day and when she revived a few minutes later discovered her handbag had been stolen, police said. A woman shopping at Whole Foods Market, 40 E. 14th St., at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 31, discovered her wallet was stolen when she was about to pay at the cash register. She learned on Jan. 3 that unauthorized charges of $125 had been made on her credit card two blocks away at Walgreens on Union Square, police said.
Auto larceny
A man who parked his car at the curb in front of 21 E. 10th St. at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 31 returned on Jan. 3 and found it had been stolen, police said. A man who parked his car on the southwest corner of Perry and Bleecker Sts. at 11 p.m. New Year’s Eve returned at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 1 and found it was gone, police said. A thief broke the right rear passenger-side window of a car parked on the northwest corner of Fifth Ave. at E. 13th St. sometime between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Jan. 1, police said. The thief took a number of unspecified items.
