Cyclist victim, 74, ID’d
Police on Monday identified the woman who was struck and killed by a school bus while riding her bicycle on Tues., Jan. 5, at Delancey and Ludlow Sts. The victim, Fuen Bai, was a 74-year-old resident of 620 E. 13th St. in the Tanya Towers project. She was riding east on Delancey at 4 p.m. when she was struck by a full-size yellow school bus that was backing up, police said. The driver was not charged and there was no criminality in the incident, police said. Tanya Towers was built in 1973 as a residence for the deaf, though today houses both deaf and hearing residents. A Tanya Towers staff member on Tuesday said the building houses seniors and people with various disabilities; she said she didn’t know if Bai was deaf or disabled.
West Village holdup
Three men walked into a deli at 140 Charles St. at Washington St. at 5:25 a.m. Jan. 10 and proceeded to shoplift at the point of a BB gun, police said. Sixth Precinct officers responded as the trio was fleeing on foot. Officer Joseph Parisi chased through moving vehicular traffic and apprehended David Brightman, but the accomplices escaped. Later, Bright-man was also identified as the suspect who put a chokehold on a victim and stole his car keys at 1 a.m. on Dec. 15 at Barrow and West St. and drove off with the victim’s car. Brightman, 28, was being held on robbery charges pending a Fri., Jan. 15, court date.
Car was loaded
A man driving a car with Georgia license plates hit a parked car in front of 76 Bank St. at 6:05 a.m. Sat., Jan. 9, police said. The suspect, Corey Davidson, 28 — who had bloodshot eyes, slurred his speech and smelled of alcohol — was apprehended with a bottle of Grey Goose vodka on the passenger-side floor of the car and a Taurus 9-millimeter semi-automatic pistol loaded with a magazine clip of hollow-point bullets tucked in the glove compartment, police said. Davidson was charged with driving while intoxicated and felonious criminal possession of a weapon.
Elizabeth Irwin burglary
Burglars entered Elizabeth Irwin High School, 40 Charlton St., around 12:50 a.m. Mon., Jan 4, and made off with 20 laptop computers from offices on four floors of the building, police said. There were no signs of forced entry to the building, but the office doors were forced open. A witness told police that he had spoken to a stranger in the building at 12:55 a.m. who identified himself as “Giuseppe” and said he was a night watchman at the school-expansion construction site at 42 Charlton St. But the contractor told police they did not employ anyone named “Giuseppe,” described as a white man, 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a strong build and short curly brown hair.
Cycling cell snatcher
A man riding a bicycle snatched a cell phone from a woman who was talking on it on the northwest corner of Sixth Ave. and Canal St. at 11:30 a.m. Wed., Dec. 31, police said. The victim, 21, who lives nearby, said the phone has a Japanese service provider and there were no unauthorized calls on the phone. The thief was described only as a black male.
Cold-day theft
The owner of Patina boutique, at 451 Broome St., told police that she was alone in the shop at 3 p.m. Thurs., Dec. 17, and did not get a good look at the thief who took a sable fur jacket valued at $5,000 from a hanger and fled.
Lifted at club
A New Brunswick, N.J., man told police he was at Greenhouse nightclub, 150 Varick St., during the early hours of Thurs., Jan. 5, when he discovered at 3 a.m. as he was about to pay the tab that his wallet had been lifted from the back pocket of his trousers. He lost $150 cash, credit cards and his train ticket back home to New Brunswick. An unauthorized charge of less than $5 was made on one of his credit cards that day to a taxicab, police said.
