Squatter princess and drag queens

The weeklong HOWL! Festival of East Village Arts filled Tompkins Square Park and neighborhood venues with art, music, dance, film and poetry last week. This year’s festival paid special tribute to Allen Ginsberg and his seminal poem “HOWL!”, from which the event takes its name. Clockwise from top left, Milo, 2, and mom Susie, of the East Village, watched the passing of the HOWL! Pantheon Processional — complete with papier-mâché puppet heads of famous East Village artists — as the parade passed by on St. Mark’s Pl. on Saturday morning; Councilmember Margarita Lopez and actress Rosario Dawson, who grew up in an East Village squat, shared a hug by The Cooper Union before the processional started; Wigstock emcee Lady Bunny, third from left, with members of “Provincetown” on stage in Tompkins Square on Saturday afternoon.
